Tourism, business meetings, conferences, or short study — for South Africa you need a visa in advance. The most important things are the right category, complete documents, and understanding that a visa does not mean "guaranteed entry" at the border.

For short-term visits (tourism/family visit/business) to South Africa, the basic category is the Visitor's Visa — according to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), it is intended for travellers who have a permanent residence outside South Africa and enter the country temporarily for up to 90 days. Official source: DHA — Types of Visas.
DHA states several key rules: a visa means the application was considered by the embassy/mission/consulate; but the final right to enter the country and the length of stay are determined by the immigration officer at the border. Also, visas are not issued at South African ports on arrival, and airlines are obliged to require a visa before boarding (if required). Source: DHA — Types of Visas.
For Georgian citizens, the main question is: are we on the "visa exempt" list? Georgia is not listed in DHA's published list, so in practice you must plan to obtain a visa in advance through the relevant mission. In DIRCO's "representation abroad" list, Georgia is accredited as Representation from Kyiv, Ukraine (may change): DIRCO — South African Representation Abroad (G). In practice, applicants residing in Georgia often contact the South African Embassy in Turkey (Ankara) visa section for appointment/collection: South African Embassy Ankara (DIRCO). (List and conditions may be updated — confirm officially before travel.)
According to DHA, a Visitor's Visa can be issued for various purposes (tourism, business visit, conference, research, charity/volunteering, etc.). The key is that your real purpose must exactly match the category, because "wrong purpose" can lead to refusal or problems at the border. Official source: DHA — Types of Visas.
For Georgians, the most common scenarios look like this:
For a general overview — what is the difference between visa, permit, and various "online/offline" processes — see our visa guide. If you are also considering other destinations in Africa, you can compare Kenya (safari/nature) or Morocco (culture/cities) — but each country's visa rules differ.
With South Africa visas, "failure" often happens not on one document but on the overall logic: purpose/plans/finances do not fit together, or host/business purpose confirmation is incomplete. We structure the process so the application is clear and understandable for the consul.
Check off items as you gather them
DHA's visa-exempt list is on the "Types of Visas" page; Georgia is usually not on that list. Confirm before travel as rules may be updated.
Tourism/family visit, business meeting, conference or other short-term purpose — category must match your real plan.
Passport, return ticket, funds, accommodation, yellow fever certificate if required, and minors' additional documents.
DHA explains that applications are considered at mission level and requirements "may vary by country", so check procedure with your jurisdiction. For Georgia, DIRCO list accredits from Kyiv, but practical submission often via South African Embassy Ankara.
Processing time varies; buying tickets "firmly" until approval is at your own risk.
Remember: a visa is a prerequisite, but the final permission and length of stay are determined by the officer at the border (DHA).
